God and outcomes

When God is intent on something he can do it.

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”

John 18v8

The soldiers were intent on capturing everyone with Jesus. One man only escaped their grasp by slipping out of his clothes.

When Jesus said, “Let these men go”, it must have sounded pathetic. We know they all got away but, at the time Jesus must have sounded ridiculous.

This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”

When I consider what might happen I find it hard to remember that God is bigger than the chances. When the Father is determined something will happen, he can ensure it.

Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

John 18v10

I would have expected Peter’s violence to anger the soldiers so that there would be no mercy and no escape. God’s mercy and grace was bigger than Peter’s hatred and anger. Am I willing to trust God however improbable something looks, however badly I have messed up?
