How do we cope with the encroaching darkness of our culture? I see the darkness most plainly through the world of film. Watch movies that were mainstream from 10, 20, 30 years ago and see how they have become progressively darker.
We respond as if it is our role to stop this darkness. But how does the Lord respond? I am shocked to realise that He is both Lord of the night and of the day!
You bring darkness, it becomes night, and all the beasts of the forest prowl. The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God. The sun rises, and they steal away… Then man goes out to his work, to his labor. Psa 104:19-23
The Lord has his purposes even for the night – physical and spiritual! As we see the darkness encroaching, many respond with fear, but he is Lord of both day and night and is not caught unaware. We are not saved by it being day, we are saved by our Lord. We need to trust Him for the night.
When the sun shines we do not see the stars. When the moon is shining we see a few stars but when there is true darkness the stars are magnificent. Are we willing to trust our Lord for the night He has set us in and shine in the darkness?
‘Be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world’ Philippians2:15

Thank you, this is very helpful. I always have thought of darkness as bad, a necessary evil to get a glimpse of the stars…
