Walking with the God who knows us

Lessons of blindness

Eva and I are walking blind. Without clear direction, a sense of dependence and trust is developed.

Teach me your decrees, O Lord; I will keep them to the end.

Psalm 119 v33

Blindness brings greater fragility in a walk with God. There is a greater focus on what God might be saying and a desperation to learn.

Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart.

Psalm 119v34

When blind, understanding is limited. I long for the ease there was when understanding was clear and I could go freely with all my heart. Yet, without it comes a greater sense of dependence.

Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found.

Psalm 119v35

The path of God’s commands is clear. Love is still love, faithfulness is still faithfulness yet, tempered with questions – Is this what the Lord intends for us?

Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you.

Psalm 119v38

When blind, God’s promise keeps me hopeful. He has reassured that blindness is for a season. There will come a time of clarity.

Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good.

Psalm 119v39

Part of blindness is to unlearn forgetting to go with God or presuming I am on his path. Through it I regain a way of close dependence.
