There is an ambition that the Lord applauds. He says,
But let the one who boasts boast about this: That they have the understanding to know me …”
Jeremiah 9v24
So how do we fulfil this ambition to know God?
There are two aspects. There is the absolute launch into a committed relationship through turning from selfishness and trusting Jesus. There is also a developing knowledge as we grow to see clearly the one we love. Jesus said,
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Matthew 5:8
The Father develops our hearts through our choices. The psalms allude to this,
Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.
Psalms 24:3-4
Life asks questions: Who are you really? How pure is your heart? When I choose to live like Jesus, then he delights to share more of himself. We see him more clearly.
We also develop our hearts through expressing our passions. Jesus tells us,
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.
Matthew 6:22-23
When I feast on God, on what is pure, I see him more clearly. As I choose his ways, I come to know him better and delight in following him into Justice and Righteousness.
