Peacemakers?

If Jesus is the prince of peace, why is there so much conflict in the world? Jesus himself said,

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Matthew 5v9

In our culture we understand ‘peacemaker’ as someone who arbitrates between warring factions. Jesus resisted this role. Take this situation for example,

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”

Luke 12:13-14

Jesus did however speak as a peacemaker to this man’s troubled heart,

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

Luke 12:15

Jesus saw the source of turmoil was the man’s focus on riches. If the man could surrender that, he would have the capacity to seek Jesus for himself. He would not try to use him to get what he wanted. Then he would have peace, and the Father would ensure his wellbeing. For Jesus said,

seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33

Concerning peace in a tumultuous world, Jesus said,

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

What peace motivates you?
