Walking with the God who knows us

Motives for a sign

When I am looking for signs is it because I don’t know which is God’s way and am willing to go anywhere he reveals, or is it because I am struggling to overcome unbelief or is it because I don’t want to believe and I put up obstacles to justify my unbelief?

the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

Matthew 16v1

When the Lord gives a sign as a gift I can be thankful. When I demand a sign that is abusive. Jesus saw through their request and responded appropriately.

Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign,

Matthew 16v4

When I demand proof, I am setting myself up as judge. In this case a judge over God Almighty. That requires a degree of conceit and arrogance that was too much even for Jesus.

Then Jesus left them and went away.

Matthew 16v4

Jesus did not stick around to argue the case. The people had revealed their hearts as adulterous. They might claim an attachment to God but they had another, stronger attachment. It was to a reading of a text and the approval of their colleagues and they were unwilling to surrender.
