In our purpose driven world am I willing for an encounter that seemingly has no purpose?
When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” … Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” … Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. John 21v9-13
When Jesus decided to set up this encounter he was really thoughtful. He prepared a fire to cook breakfast with the very freshest of fish. This whole encounter was about being together in the intimate atmosphere of a meal. There was no big ministry purpose. It was a time to relax after a long night at work. A purpose unfolded, and that is often the way when we embrace times without purpose.
I have to ask, if someone were to present themselves to me for a surprise time together without ‘purpose’, would I be happy to stay? Would my mind be caught up with what else I could be doing? Jesus said,
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25v40
